Denise is 19. He has been with us a few months, is an orphan and has a few 'problems'. I met him when I arrived 5 weeks ago. He was hard to talk to, always loud and
argumentative. One day I gave him a hug - he was shocked. I continued to hug him each day and after a few weeks he began to hug back.
Tonight as I was leaving the shelter I went up to him and hugged him and stayed holding him, he lay his head on my shoulder and asked "how long must I hug you" - I answered "as long as you want". He said "why?" I answered - "because it's great to know that you are loved".
He looked up at me and asked -" is it?"
On one hand I was joyous that he had hugged me and for so long, on the other my heart broke that this kid had no idea what it was to be loved. |
